Special Tribute
Developing Communication Privacy Management Theory
As is true with most ideas, there are predecessors who lay the groundwork. The creation of new ideas is built on explorations made by others and this tribute is to those whose thoughtfulness and insights have contributed to the development of Communication Privacy Management (CPM) theory. Acknowledging all who have shaped the ideas forming CPM theory is limited by space. Yet. I feel compelled to offer a tribute to those who sparked my interest in privacy management. Their work enabled the scholarly journey made to develop CPM theory.
First and foremost, I am indebted to the esteemed Professor Irwin Altman whose work started my journey to help me understand the integral role that both disclosing and privacy management play. His work laid the foundation for seeing that there are two sides to the puzzle in considering how disclosure and privacy issues are connected. Of course, there was much more of his work that I benefited from, but the eye-opening experience of making this discovery set my path. Over the years, he has become a cherished mentor and friend, for which I am grateful.
I am also greatly influenced by the work of highly respected Professor Val Derlega. He and his colleagues pushed forward the connections between disclosure and privacy issues, particularly advancing how privacy boundaries operated, among other contributions. Likewise, the early work of Professor Sidney Jourard demonstrate that self-disclosure is important to everyday life and contributed to showing the utility of revealing about the self. There are many more scholars, each forming building blocks of CPM theory. Finally, I have been fortunate to have many productive and insightful colleagues as well as students that contributed to CPM development. As you explore this website you will see the productivity of these colleagues and the different ways they have contributed to advancing ideas about CPM theory.
Sincerely,
Dr. Sandra Petronio, Director
